Personalized Learning – The Best, Bad Solution

If you follow this blog, then you know, that I have been interested in the wicked problem of Personalized Learning. You can read my post about Personalized Learning here, where you can also view my infographic on Personalized Learning. Throughout the process of trying to find a solution to Personalized Learning, I have been working with a think tank, consisting of three other educators. Together, we have been asking questions and doing research, to guide us to a best, bad solution. Through the question process, we created a survey to send out to our professional communities of practice. You can read about the survey here. We had 139 educators from across the world respond to the survey. 78.7% of the respondents are interested in implementing Personalized Learning into their classrooms.  This data shows a clear need and want, but what is the best model to use? According to the data, most educators want to learn more about Project Based Learning (PBL) and Flipped Learning. Now, that we know the models to focus on, we cannot forget about TPACK. You can read more about TPACK here, and here. The technology that came forward, through the data, is Google Classroom and Seesaw. Both apps, are great for implementing Project Based Learning and Flipped Learning. Having personal experience with both apps, and Project Based Learning, I agree with the data. After reviewing all the data, my think tank came up with the following solution; there needs to be a commonality for Personalized Learning in districts/schools. Districts/Schools should choose between PBL or Flipped Learning and use either Google Classroom or Seesaw, based on the needs of the students. This will provide a commonality of Personalized Learning through the district/school for educators and students to be familiar with and use. I hope that through the last few weeks, that you have come to see Personalized Learning as a beautifully wicked problem. Moreover, understand how this is the best, bad solution that we could come up with, using the data and research gathered. Please enjoy our presentation on Personalized Learning below. As always, I would love to hear your feedback, especially if you have used Personalized Learning in your classroom.
